Today, everyone has at least a pair of sneakers in their wardrobe. Sneakers have become a must-have to complete sporty outfits, but not only that. They are comfortable and fashionable; they are an actual symbol that people cannot help but wearing. Even the biggest fashion brands chose sneakers for their fashion shows, making them a versatile product to wear with classic clothes too. Therefore, you can match sneakers with different styles: you are free to choose. You can wear them with jeans or sporty trousers, but also with sheath dresses and office clothes.
During the years, shoes designers created a lot of different models of sneakers, and some of them have also became an object of value. Nowadays, many collectors buy the rarest models and the limited editions.
But how were sneakers created and what is their story?
The first sneaker-like models made their first appearance in the 20th century when the native Americans started using latex to cover their foot sole for a better protection. However, the turning point was reached around 1850 when the first shoes with a super-resistant sole in latex were created. Later on, at the beginning of the 20th century, during the Olympic games of Athens, every athlete started wearing the first sneakers to better perform during sport competitions. In the following years, the biggest brands, like Nike and Adidas, delved into the sneakers industry, producing different models of rubber-soled sneakers that became famous during the years. Among these models, it is worth mentioning the Air Jordan by Nike, which were worn and signed by the basketball champion Michael Jordan.

The name ‘sneakers’ was coined by advertising executive Henry Nelson McKinney and derives from ‘to sneak’, which means ‘out of sight’. This term refers precisely to the rubber soles used, which make the shoe light and silent but also invisible when worn. The sole in question was invented in England in 1839 to prevent sailors from slipping or leaving tracks on the docks.
Over the years, however, this shoe has gone viral as much for its functionality as for its iconicity. In fact, sneakers are not just a simple shoe but rather become a great cultural symbol and a true lifestyle.
